Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

.
Joe Gillis (William Holden): It's dawn now and they must have photographed me a thousand times. Then they got a couple of pruning hooks from the garden and fished me out... ever so gently. Funny, how gentle people get with you once you're dead.

Today would've been Billy Wilder's 105th birthday if he hadn't had to go and die on us in 2002. Billy, you didn't have to do that, you know. We would've been gentle anyway.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Showgirls (1995)

James Smith: Now wait a minute. Listen, just listen. Man you've got more talent when you dance than anybody I've ever seen. And I've seen a lot of dancers. I studied at New York... Alvin Ailey. You burn when you dance.

Nomi Malone: But you said I couldn't.

James: Well you've got to hold some of it in, and dancing ain't fucking.

Nomi: What's that! More Wisdom! I know that!

James: No you don't. You dance like when you fuck that guy last night.

Nomi: What guy?

James: That guy with the chick. You took 'em in the back.

Nomi: I didn't fuck him.

James: Yes you did, you fucked him and her.

Nomi: Are you following me around? I didn't fuck anybody I was just...

James: I saw you! Man everybody got AIDS and shit. You know, what is it that you think you do? You fuck 'em without fucking them, that's what you do! Well it ain't right! You've got too much talent for it to be right!

Nomi: Get out of here!

James: Bitch, I'm tellin' you the truth!

David: I don't know. I think it's harder.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Merrick's Mother: Never. Oh, never. Nothing will die.
The stream flows, the wind blows, the cloud fleets,
the heart beats. Nothing will die.

Take that, Terrence Malick.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Lelaina (Winona Ryder): I just don't understand why things just can't go back to normal at the end of the half hour like on the Brady Bunch or something.

Troy (Ethan Hawke): Well, cuz Mr. Brady died of AIDS. Things don't turn out like that.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Reese Bobby: And the first thing you gotta learn if you're gonna be a race-car driver, is that you don't listen to losers like your know-it-all teacher here.

Schoolteacher: Okay, I think that's enough.

Reese Bobby: Your teacher wants you to go slow, and she's wrong because it's the fastest who get paid and it's the fastest who get laid.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Carlos: So, what, were they psychos, or...
Seth Gecko: Did they look like psychos? Is that what they looked like? They were vampires. Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a fuck how crazy they are!

Happy 50th, George Clooney.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

"Parks and Recreation"
.

Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari): Zerts are what I call desserts. Tray-trays are entrees. I call sandwiches sammies, sandoozles, or Adam Sandlers. Air conditioners are cool-blasterz, with a z. I don’t know where that came from. I call cakes big ol’ cookies. I call noodles long-ass rice. Fried chicken is fri-fri chicky-chick. Chicken parm is chicky chicky parm parm. Chicken cacciatore? Chicky catch. I call eggs pre-birds, or future birds. Root beer is super water. Tortillas are bean blankies. And I call forks…. Food rakes.

I never eat chicken parmesan but I want to order it everywhere I go from now on just so I can call it "chicky chicky parm parm." Last night's Parks & Rec was, what, the fiftieth straight gut-busting episode? I hope y'all watch this show, because it is possibly, give or take a Fringe, my favorite thing on TV right now. It's like the magic hour, a place where you realize that every single aspect of something is firing on every cylinder, working perfectly. It's a delight. If you asked me to name a favorite character I might have a breakdown, there is so much to love.

And I never thought Aziz would be one of those things, his schtick wasn't my favorite beforehand, but they temper him with so much sweetness and rascally tiny-man buffoonish joy that you can't help but love it.

Thank you. Thank you.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

The Birds (1963)
Cathy (Veronica Cartwright): I still don't understand how you knew I wanted lovebirds.

Melanie (Tippi Hedren): Your brother told me.

Lydia (Jessica Tandy): Then you knew Mitch in San Francisco. Is that right?

Melanie: No, not exactly.

Cathy: Mitch knows a lot of people in San Francisco. Of course, they're mostly hoods.

Lydia: Cathy!

Cathy: Well, Mom, he's the first to admit it. He spends half his day in the detention cells at the Hall of Justice.

Lydia: In a democracy, Cathy, everyone is entitled to a fair trial. Your brother's practice...

Cathy: Aw, Mom, please. I know all that democracy jazz. They're still hoods  ... He has a client now who shot his wife in the head six times. Six times! Can you imagine it? I mean, even twice would be overdoing it, don't you think?

Happy 62nd birthday, Veronica Cartwright!

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Scream 3 (2000)

Gale: What the hell are you doing?

Jennifer: Being Gale Weathers! What are you doing?

Gale: I am Gale Weathers!

Jennifer: Here's how I see it. I've got no house, no bodyguard, no movie and I'm being stalked. Because someone wants to kill me? No, because someone wants to kill you. So, now, starting now, I go where you go. So that if someone wants to kill me, I'll be with you and since they really wanna kill you, they won't kill me, they'll kill you, make sense?

Gale: None!

Jennifer: You know in the movies, I play you as being much smarter.

Everything You Ever Need To Know About Life...

... you can learn from:

Charlene: You think it's gonna go on forever, but it's like one of them videos you know... of a fireplace, that you put on your TV. And like no matter how close you get to the... screen... he's never gonna warm you up.

A Brief Lesson In Movie Nerdery

.

Hey, did you know that today's the sort-of 142nd birthday of the substance that would turn into film? Well it is, and over at The Film Experience you can see me ramble about that for a brief moment. Go forth, see, and if words like "cellulose nitrote" and squabbles over patent rights send you into a tizzy, prepare for extreme tizziness!
